Baccarat strategy based on real maths: why the Banker bet is best, how commission works, which side bets to avoid and why patterns mean nothing.

By [GambGenius Editorial Team](https://gambgenius.com/about/) Updated 2 October 2026 9 min read Beginner Next review due 31 December 2026

Quick answer

The best baccarat strategy is to bet on the Banker every hand. Even after the 5% commission, Banker has a house edge of about 1.06% in an eight-deck game, compared with 1.24% on Player and 14.36% on Tie. No pattern, trend or scorecard reading improves on that.

## Key takeaways

- Banker is the best bet in baccarat at 1.06% house edge, Player is close behind at 1.24%, and Tie at 8:1 costs 14.36%.
- The 5% commission exists because Banker wins more often; without it the bet would favour the player.
- No-commission tables usually recover the difference elsewhere, typically by paying 1:2 on a Banker win with six.
- Side bets such as Pairs, Dragon Bonus and Panda 8 generally carry edges between 2.6% and 11%.
- Scorecards and road patterns have no predictive value because each hand is independent of the last.

Baccarat has a reputation as a high-roller's game, but its strategy is the simplest in the casino. You do not choose whether to draw a card; the dealer follows fixed rules for both hands. Your only real decision is which outcome to back and how much to stake. That makes baccarat strategy almost entirely about understanding the odds of each bet and avoiding the expensive ones.

Get that right and baccarat is one of the cheapest games to play. Get it wrong and the Tie bet and side bets can make it one of the most expensive.

1.06% House edge on Banker (8 decks, 5% commission)

1.24% House edge on Player

14.36% House edge on Tie at 8:1

## How baccarat works in 60 seconds

Two hands are dealt: Player and Banker. The names are traditional; you can bet on either, and neither belongs to you or the casino. Cards from 2 to 9 count at face value, tens and picture cards count as zero, and aces count as one. Only the last digit of a total matters, so a hand of 7 and 8 equals 5. The hand closest to 9 wins.

After the first two cards, a third card may be drawn for either hand according to a fixed table called the tableau. Player draws on 0 to 5 and stands on 6 or 7. Banker's decision depends on its own total and on the Player's third card. You never make these choices, which is why there is no baccarat equivalent of a [blackjack strategy chart](https://gambgenius.com/strategy/blackjack-basic-strategy/).

You can bet on three main outcomes: Banker wins, Player wins, or a Tie. Winning Player bets pay 1:1, winning Banker bets pay 1:1 minus a 5% commission, and Tie usually pays 8:1. If the hand ties, Banker and Player bets are returned.

## Baccarat odds and house edge by bet

The figures below are for the standard eight-deck game. Differences between six and eight decks are a few hundredths of a percent.

| Bet | Payout | Win probability | House edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banker | 1:1 less 5% commission | 45.86% | 1.06% |
| Player | 1:1 | 44.62% | 1.24% |
| Tie | 8:1 | 9.52% | 14.36% |
| Tie (rare variant) | 9:1 | 9.52% | 4.84% |

Banker and Player win probabilities add up to 90.48% because the remaining 9.52% of hands are ties, which push on those bets. The Banker hand wins more often because it acts second and the tableau lets it react to the Player's third card.

### Why the Tie bet looks tempting

A payout of 8 to 1 feels generous, and ties occur often enough to keep the bet alive in your mind. But a tie happens less than once in ten hands, so a fair payout would be roughly 9.5 to 1. The shortfall costs about $14.36 for every $100 staked, making Tie one of the worst bets in any casino.

The most expensive habit at the table

Adding a small Tie bet "for fun" alongside a Banker bet can more than double your cost per hand. A $100 Banker bet with a $10 Tie bet costs around $1.06 plus $1.44 in expected loss, so the small side bet costs more than the main one.

## Understanding the Banker commission

Without commission, a Banker bet paying even money would give players an edge of about 1.24%. Casinos take 5% of every winning Banker bet to swing that back in their favour. The commission is either deducted immediately online or tracked with markers on a land-based table and collected later.

Worked example

A winning $100 Banker bet returns $95 profit. Over 1,000 Banker bets of $100, you would expect to lose roughly $1,060, compared with roughly $1,240 betting on Player.

The commission rate matters. Some casinos offer reduced commission of 4% or less, particularly at high-stakes tables. Each percentage point of commission is worth about 0.46% of house edge, so a 4% commission cuts the Banker edge to around 0.6%. If you see it, it is the best baccarat game available.

### No-commission baccarat

No-commission variants remove the 5% charge but recover it elsewhere. The most common rule pays only 1:2 when the Banker wins with a total of six, raising the Banker house edge to about 1.46%. EZ Baccarat instead pushes Banker bets when the Banker wins with a three-card seven, giving a Banker edge of about 1.02%. Always read the rules panel: "no commission" does not automatically mean better value.

## Baccarat side bets to know about

Modern baccarat tables, especially live dealer games, offer a menu of side bets. Payouts vary between operators, so the figures below are typical rather than universal.

| Side bet | What wins | Typical payout | Typical house edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Player Pair / Banker Pair | First two cards are a pair | 11:1 | About 10.4% |
| Dragon Bonus (Player) | Natural win or win by 4+ points | Up to 30:1 | About 2.7% |
| Dragon Bonus (Banker) | Natural win or win by 4+ points | Up to 30:1 | About 9.4% |
| Dragon 7 (EZ Baccarat) | Banker wins with three-card 7 | 40:1 | About 7.6% |
| Panda 8 (EZ Baccarat) | Player wins with three-card 8 | 25:1 | About 10.2% |

The Player Dragon Bonus is the least expensive of these, but even it costs more than twice as much as the Banker bet. Treat side bets as an occasional entertainment expense rather than part of your strategy.

## Why patterns, roads and systems don't work

Baccarat tables display scorecards and "roads" such as the Big Road, Bead Plate and Big Eye Boy, showing streaks of Banker and Player wins. Many players use them to spot trends and decide where to bet next. They have no predictive value.

Each hand is dealt from a shoe of 416 cards. The removal of a few cards changes the next hand's probabilities by only tiny fractions of a percent, and not in a way any road pattern captures. A run of eight Banker wins does not make Player "due", nor does it make Banker "hot". The probabilities on the next hand are effectively the same as on the first.

The same applies to staking systems. Martingale, Paroli, the 1-3-2-6 system and others change how your wins and losses are distributed, but not your expected loss, which is always the total amount wagered multiplied by the house edge. Our [roulette strategy guide](https://gambgenius.com/strategy/roulette-strategy/) walks through a Martingale bust in detail; the maths is identical at the baccarat table.

What about card counting?

Researchers have shown that counting in baccarat produces only a negligible gain on the main bets. Some side bets can become briefly favourable late in a shoe, but the opportunities are rare, small and impractical, and online games commonly reshuffle frequently.

## Baccarat variants you will find online

Online and live dealer casinos offer several versions of the game. The underlying odds of Punto Banco, the version described above, apply to most of them, but a few rule changes are worth knowing.

| Variant | What is different | Effect on the player |
|---|---|---|
| Punto Banco | The standard game with fixed drawing rules | Banker 1.06%, Player 1.24% |
| Mini baccarat | Smaller table, lower limits, dealer handles all cards | Same odds, faster pace |
| Speed baccarat | Rounds of roughly 27 seconds | Same edge per hand, higher cost per hour |
| Squeeze baccarat | Cards revealed slowly for drama | Same odds, slower pace |
| Multiplier baccarat | Random multipliers on winning hands funded by an extra fee per bet | Higher volatility, slightly higher edge on most versions |
| Chemin de Fer | Players take turns as banker and may choose to draw on 5 | Small skill element, rarely found online |

### Pace is the hidden cost

Variants that change only the speed of the game do not change the house edge per hand, but they change how much you wager in an hour. A traditional table might deal 40 to 60 hands an hour; a speed table can exceed 100. If you play speed baccarat, reduce your stake accordingly so that your hourly cost stays within your budget.

### Multiplier games and fees

Some live games add random multipliers to winning hands, funded by a fee of around 20% added to each main bet. The base payouts are adjusted to compensate, and most published return-to-player figures for these games are a little lower than standard Banker play. They can be entertaining, but they are not a cheaper way to play.

## A practical baccarat strategy

1. **Bet Banker by default.** It is the lowest-edge bet on the table. Switching to Player occasionally for variety costs very little, at 0.18% more.
2. **Never bet Tie at 8:1.** If a table pays 9:1 it is less bad, but still more than four times as expensive as Banker.
3. **Seek better rules.** Reduced commission and EZ Baccarat both improve the Banker bet. Standard "no commission" with a 1:2 payout on six does not.
4. **Watch the pace.** Online and live speed baccarat can deal more than 100 hands an hour. At $25 a hand on Banker, that is about $26 an hour in expected loss.
5. **Use a fixed bankroll.** Flat stakes of 1% to 2% of your session bankroll keep variance manageable. See our [bankroll management guide](https://gambgenius.com/strategy/bankroll-management/).

## Baccarat with casino bonuses

Because baccarat's edge is so low, casinos treat it carefully in bonus terms. Many weight it at 0% to 10% towards [wagering requirements](https://gambgenius.com/strategy/wagering-requirements-explained/), and some prohibit betting Banker and Player in the same hand or count only one side. Check the terms, and use our [wagering calculator](https://gambgenius.com/tools/wagering-calculator/) to see how much play a bonus really requires before choosing an offer from our [casino bonuses](https://gambgenius.com/casino-bonuses/) list. Cashback offers often suit baccarat players better than deposit matches.

Baccarat is fast, simple and relatively inexpensive when played sensibly, but the house still has the edge on every bet. Set limits before you sit down, and if you find yourself chasing losses, our [responsible gambling](https://gambgenius.com/responsible-gambling/) page lists free, confidential help.

## Check what you learned

Three quick questions, optional. Answers are shown right here; nothing is shared.

1. Which baccarat bet has the lowest house edge in the standard eight-deck game? Banker Player Tie at 8:1
**Show the answer**

**Banker.** Banker carries about 1.06% after the 5% commission, Player about 1.24% and Tie at 8:1 about 14.36%.

2. You add a $10 Tie bet to a $100 Banker bet. Roughly what does the Tie bet cost you on average? About $0.11 About $1.44 Nothing, because ties are returned
**Show the answer**

**About $1.44.** $10 at a 14.36% edge is about $1.44, more than the $1.06 the $100 Banker bet costs.

3. What do scorecards and 'roads' tell you about the next hand? Which side is due Which side is hot Practically nothing
**Show the answer**

**Practically nothing.** Removing a few cards from a 416-card shoe changes the next hand by tiny fractions of a percent; roads have no predictive value.

Questions

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the best bet in baccarat?**

The Banker bet. In an eight-deck game it carries a house edge of about 1.06% after the 5% commission, the lowest of the three main bets.

**Why do casinos charge commission on Banker bets?**

Because the drawing rules make the Banker hand win slightly more often than the Player hand. Without the 5% commission, a Banker bet would have a player advantage of about 1.2%.

**Is the Tie bet ever worth it?**

No. At the standard 8:1 payout the Tie bet has a house edge of about 14.36%, more than ten times the Banker bet. Even at the rarer 9:1 payout the edge is still about 4.84%.

**Is no-commission baccarat better?**

Usually not. Most no-commission games pay only half on a Banker win with a total of six, which raises the Banker edge to about 1.46%. Compare the rules before assuming it is a better deal.

**Can you count cards in baccarat?**

In theory, but the gains are tiny. Removing cards changes the Banker and Player edges so little that a counter would rarely gain an advantage, and only on side bets in very specific situations.

**Do baccarat patterns like the Big Road predict results?**

No. Each hand is dealt independently from a large shoe, so streaks and road patterns describe the past without predicting the future. They exist to keep players engaged.
