How slot wins are calculated: paytables, line vs total bet, stacking multipliers, max win caps, RTP, hit frequency, expected loss and near-misses.

Quick answer

A slot win is the paytable value for the symbols you land, multiplied by your line or total bet and by any active multipliers, up to the game's maximum win cap. Over the long run a slot pays back its RTP, so at 96% you lose about $4 for every $100 wagered on average, but individual sessions vary enormously because of volatility.

## Key takeaways

- Paytable values are multiples of either your line bet or your total bet; the game rules tell you which.
- Multipliers can be added or multiplied together, and every win is limited by a maximum win cap such as 5,000x.
- Expected loss = total amount wagered × (100% − RTP), so 100 spins at $1 on a 96% slot cost $4 on average.
- Volatility dwarfs the expected loss in short sessions, and most sessions finish worse than the average.
- Every spin is decided by a certified RNG; near-misses, recent wins and time of day tell you nothing about the next spin.

When a slot flashes a win, a lot of maths has happened in a fraction of a second: a random number generator has chosen the result, the game has checked it against the paytable, applied multipliers and checked the total against a maximum win cap. This guide walks through each step so you can read any slot's rules, check a win yourself and understand what RTP, hit frequency and volatility really mean for your money.

## Reading the paytable

The paytable, found in the game's info or help menu, lists what every symbol combination pays. It also contains the rules that matter most: how wins are evaluated (lines, ways, clusters or pay anywhere), how wilds and scatters behave, how multipliers combine, the maximum win and the RTP. Our guide to slot mechanics explains the different win rules in detail.

Payouts are shown in one of three ways:

| Paytable style | Example entry | What it means at a $1 total bet |
|---|---|---|
| Currency at your stake | 5 × Diamond = $5.00 | Read directly; the table updates when you change stake |
| Multiple of line bet | 5 × Diamond = 100x line bet | On 20 lines, line bet is $0.05, so the win is $5 |
| Multiple of total bet | 5 × Diamond = 5x | $5, regardless of the number of lines or ways |

All three examples describe the same $5 win. The trap is reading a line-bet value as if it applied to the total bet, which would make the paytable look twenty times more generous than it is.

## Bet per line vs total bet

On fixed-payline games your total bet equals the line bet multiplied by the number of active lines. Each winning line pays its paytable value times the line bet, and wins on separate lines are added together. On ways, cluster and pay-anywhere games there is one total bet, and paytable values are usually quoted per way or per cluster as fractions of that total.

Formula

Spin win = Σ (paytable value × line bet or total bet × number of ways for that combination) × applicable multipliers, capped at the max win

Worked example: a 25-line slot at $0.04 per line is a $1 spin. Three cherries on line 2 pay 20x line bet ($0.80), and four bells on line 17 pay 50x ($2.00). The spin pays $2.80. On a 243-ways game, three cherries appearing across 1 × 2 × 2 = 4 ways at 0.2x total bet each pay 4 × 0.2 × $1 = $0.80.

## How multipliers stack

Multipliers come from wilds, free spins modifiers, cascades or special symbols, and when several apply to the same win the rules say whether they are added or multiplied. This is one of the most important lines in any paytable, because the gap grows quickly.

| Multipliers on one win | Added | Multiplied | On a $2 base win |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2x + 3x | 5x | 6x | $10 vs $12 |
| 2x + 3x + 5x | 10x | 30x | $20 vs $60 |
| 10x + 25x | 35x | 250x | $70 vs $500 |

Some games also apply a global multiplier to the total of a spin or tumble sequence after individual wins are counted. Large maximum wins almost always come from these stacked or global multipliers rather than from the base paytable. Studios such as [Nolimit City](https://gambgenius.com/slots/providers/nolimit-city/), [Hacksaw Gaming](https://gambgenius.com/slots/providers/hacksaw-gaming/) and [Push Gaming](https://gambgenius.com/slots/providers/push-gaming/) are known for this style of game.

## Max win caps and casino limits

Almost every modern slot has a maximum win per spin or per feature, stated as a multiple of the total bet, for example 5,000x. At $1 per spin that is $5,000; at $0.20 it is $1,000. When a free spins round hits the cap, it typically ends at once, even if spins remain. The cap is built into the RTP, so it is not a hidden deduction, but it does mean the advertised max win is a ceiling few players ever approach.

Separate limits can apply on top:

- **Casino maximum win or payout limits** in the operator's terms, sometimes per day, week or month.

- **Bonus maximum cashout caps**, which limit what you can withdraw from bonus-funded play. Our [wagering requirements guide](https://gambgenius.com/strategy/wagering-requirements-explained/) covers these.

- **Stake limits** set by regulators. In Great Britain, online slots have been limited to £5 per spin since April 2025, and £2 for players aged 18 to 24 since May 2025.

Read the terms before a big session

A game's max win and a casino's payout limit are different things. If the casino caps payouts below what the game can pay, the casino's terms usually win. Check both, especially at offshore operators.

## What RTP and hit frequency really mean

RTP (return to player) is the percentage of all money wagered that a slot returns as winnings over a very large number of spins. A 96% slot keeps 4% on average: its house edge. RTP is calculated from the game's mathematical model and checked by simulation over many millions of spins. It is a statement about the game, not a promise about your session.

Hit frequency is the share of spins that pay anything. A slot with 25% hit frequency pays on roughly one spin in four, but many hits return less than the stake. A $0.40 win on a $1 spin counts as a hit while still losing $0.60. Since October 2021, UK rules prohibit slots from celebrating such results, where the return is equal to or less than the stake, as wins.

4% House edge on a 96% RTP slot

5.6% Chance of 10 straight losing spins at 25% hit frequency (0.75¹⁰)

37% Chance of no feature in 200 spins when it triggers 1 in 200

That last figure surprises most players. A feature that averages one trigger every 200 spins fails to arrive in 200 spins about 37% of the time, and fails to arrive in 500 spins about 8% of the time. "Average" does not mean "due".

## Expected loss: a worked example

The cost of playing slots depends on total turnover, not on how much you deposit.

Formula

Expected loss = number of spins × total bet × (100% − RTP)

1. **Set the turnover.** 100 spins at $1 = $100 wagered.
2. **Find the house edge.** 96% RTP means a 4% edge.
3. **Multiply.** $100 × 4% = $4 expected loss per 100 spins.
4. **Compare RTP versions.** The same 100 spins on a 94% version of the game cost $6, and on a 97% version $3.
5. **Scale to real sessions.** At roughly 600 spins an hour, an hour of $1 spins on a 96% game means $600 wagered and $24 expected loss.

Notice what the formula leaves out: your deposit, how long the machine has gone without paying and how much you have won or lost so far. None of them matter. Re-staking small wins also means turnover usually exceeds your deposit by a wide margin. A $100 balance played at $1 a spin on a 96% slot lasts around 2,500 spins on average before it is gone, although variance usually ends sessions much sooner or stretches them much longer.

Many games exist in several RTP versions, so the same title can cost twice as much at one casino as another. Check the RTP in the game rules, and use our [slot database](https://gambgenius.com/slots/) to compare titles and providers such as [Pragmatic Play](https://gambgenius.com/slots/providers/pragmatic-play/), [Play'n GO](https://gambgenius.com/slots/providers/play-n-go/) and [NetEnt](https://gambgenius.com/slots/providers/netent/).

## Variance and real session outcomes

The $4 expected loss per 100 spins is an average across an enormous number of sessions. Any single session is dominated by volatility. Results are measured by standard deviation, and on many slots the per-spin standard deviation is several times to well over ten times the stake. Studios rarely publish the figure, so treat the numbers below as illustrations.

| 100 spins at $1, 96% RTP | Low volatility (SD ≈ 4x) | High volatility (SD ≈ 15x) |
|---|---|---|
| Expected result | −$4 | −$4 |
| Session standard deviation (SD × √100) | ±$40 | ±$150 |
| Typical session | Small loss, occasional small profit | Often a sizeable loss, with a rare big win |

Slot results are also skewed. A small number of sessions contain huge wins that pull the average up, so the typical (median) session finishes worse than the expected loss, especially on high-volatility games. That is why most players lose more than the RTP suggests in a given night while a lucky few win big. Over thousands of sessions, the casino's edge still wins. Plan your budget around this using our [bankroll management guide](https://gambgenius.com/strategy/bankroll-management/).

Budget for the swings, not the average

Decide in advance what you are willing to lose in a session and stop when you reach it. The expected loss tells you the price of entertainment; volatility tells you how far a single session can stray from it.

## RNG certification and why near-misses mean nothing

Online slots use a random number generator that produces outcomes continuously. The result of your spin is fixed the instant you press the button; the spinning reels are animation. At licensed casinos, game software and RNGs are tested by independent laboratories such as GLI, BMM Testlabs, eCOGRA and iTech Labs before release, and regulators such as the UK Gambling Commission and the Malta Gaming Authority require games to match their published rules and RTP.

- **Every spin is independent.** A slot cannot be "due". Previous wins or losses have no effect on the next result.

- **Near-misses are just outcomes.** Two scatters with a third one position away pays exactly what any other non-winning spin pays. It carries no information about future spins.

- **Stopping the reels changes nothing.** Where slam-stop exists, it only shortens the animation. In Great Britain, spins faster than 2.5 seconds, autoplay and slam-stop features have been banned since October 2021.

- **Casinos cannot tune a game mid-session.** RTP configurations are fixed, approved and audited, not adjusted for individual players.

Understanding the maths will not make slots profitable, because the house edge applies to every dollar you wager. It will help you choose higher-RTP versions, spot misleading paytables and set realistic expectations. ## Check what you learned

Three quick questions, optional. Answers are shown right here; nothing is shared.

1. 100 spins at $1 on a 96% RTP slot. What is the expected loss? $1 $4 $40
**Show the answer**

**$4.** Expected loss = spins × bet × (100% − RTP) = 100 × $1 × 4% = $4.

2. A feature triggers on average once every 200 spins. How often does it fail to arrive in 200 spins? Never: it is due by then About 37% of the time About 5% of the time
**Show the answer**

**About 37% of the time.** The chance of no trigger in 200 spins at 1 in 200 is about 37%. 'Average' does not mean 'due'.

3. A $1 spin pays back $0.40. How do UK rules treat it? As a win to celebrate As a loss that must not be celebrated as a win As a push
**Show the answer**

**As a loss that must not be celebrated as a win.** Since October 2021, UK rules ban celebrating returns equal to or below the stake as wins.

Questions

## Frequently asked questions

**How do I calculate a slot win?**

Find the payout for your symbol combination in the paytable, multiply it by your line bet or total bet as the game specifies, then apply any multipliers. Most modern slots display paytable values in currency at your current stake, so you can read the win directly.

**What does a 5,000x max win mean?**

It is the most a single spin or bonus round can pay, expressed as a multiple of your total bet. At $1 a spin, a 5,000x cap means $5,000. When the cap is reached, the feature usually ends immediately and pays the maximum.

**How much will I lose playing slots for an hour?**

Multiply your total wagering by the house edge. At $1 per spin and roughly 600 spins an hour on a 96% RTP slot, that is $600 wagered and an expected loss of about $24. Your actual result could easily be a $150 loss or a profit, depending on volatility.

**Does a near-miss mean a slot is about to pay?**

No. Each spin is an independent outcome from a random number generator. Two scatters and a third just above the reel has no effect on the next spin's odds.

**Is the RTP the same at every stake?**

On almost all online slots, yes. The main exceptions are progressive jackpot games where only certain stakes qualify for the jackpot, and optional ante bets, which may have their own RTP listed in the rules.

**Are online slot results really random?**

At licensed casinos, yes. Game software and random number generators are tested by independent laboratories before release, and regulators require games to perform within their published RTP. Unlicensed sites offer no such protection.
