By [GambGenius Editorial Team](https://gambgenius.com/about/) Updated 16 October 2026 10 min read Beginner Next review due 14 January 2027 Quick answer A slot's win mechanic is the rule it uses to decide which symbol combinations pay. Paylines pay matching symbols along fixed paths, ways-to-win pays matches on adjacent reels in any row, Megaways varies the number of ways every spin, cluster pays rewards groups of touching symbols, and scatter pays rewards a minimum count anywhere on the grid. The mechanic changes how wins feel, not the house edge, which is set by the RTP. ## Key takeaways - Paylines, ways, Megaways, clusters and scatter pays are just different rules for spotting a winning combination. - Ways-to-win counts are calculated by multiplying the number of symbol positions on each reel: 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243. - Megaways changes reel heights every spin, from a handful of ways up to 117,649 on a six-reel, seven-row layout. - Your total bet, not the number of lines or ways, is what you risk per spin, and RTP is applied to that total. - No mechanic is better value in itself; RTP sets the cost and volatility sets the ride, so read the info panel before you play. Answers are shown right here; nothing is shared. 1. How many ways does a 5x3 ways-to-win grid have? 15 243 1,024 **Show the answer** **243.** Ways = positions on each reel multiplied together: 3⁵ = 243. A 5x4 grid gives 4⁵ = 1,024. 2. Megaways reel heights land as 2, 2, 3, 2, 2 and 2. How many ways is that spin? 13 96 117,649 **Show the answer** **96.** 2 × 2 × 3 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 96. Six reels of seven would give the maximum 117,649. 3. Does the win mechanic (lines, ways, clusters) change what a slot costs to play? Yes, ways games return more No: RTP sets the cost, the mechanic sets the shape Yes, cluster games return more **Show the answer** **No: RTP sets the cost, the mechanic sets the shape.** Paytables are balanced to the RTP, so more frequent small wins don't mean a bigger return. A Megaways slot and a payline slot with the same RTP cost you the same on average. Megaways games tend to be more volatile because the number of ways, and therefore potential win size, swings wildly from spin to spin. **Does playing more paylines increase my chances of winning?** Playing more lines increases how often you land a win, but your total stake rises in proportion. On most adjustable-line slots the RTP per dollar wagered is the same whatever number of lines you play, so you are not getting better value, just more frequent wins at a higher cost per spin. **What does 243 ways to win mean?** It means a five-reel, three-row slot pays any matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right, in any row. Each reel has three positions, so there are 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243 possible paths across the reels. **How many symbols do you need for a cluster pays win?** It depends on the game. Some cluster slots need five touching symbols, while others, such as NetEnt's Aloha! Cluster Pays, require nine. The paytable lists the minimum cluster size and how the payout grows with larger clusters. **What is a pay anywhere slot?** A pay anywhere (or scatter pays) slot awards a win when enough matching symbols land anywhere on the grid, regardless of position. Pragmatic Play's Sweet Bonanza, for example, pays for eight or more matching symbols on its 6x5 grid. **Can I choose the mechanic to improve my odds?** No. Choose by RTP first and volatility second. The mechanic is a matter of taste: it decides how the game looks and how wins are counted, but the long-run return is set by the game's mathematical model.
