Quick answer

Slot features are special rules, such as free spins, wilds, multipliers, cascades, respins and bonus games, that create bigger or more frequent wins than ordinary symbol matches. They do not add value on top of the RTP; they are part of it. Features mostly decide how the return is distributed: the more of the RTP a game packs into rare features, the more volatile it is.

Key takeaways

  • A slot's RTP is the sum of its base game and feature returns, so features never add free value on top.
  • A feature's contribution to RTP equals its trigger probability multiplied by its average win.
  • Sticky wilds, progressive multipliers and retriggers concentrate returns into rare, large wins and raise volatility.
  • Ante bets and bonus buys change the price of a spin and sometimes the RTP; read the info panel before using them.
  • Pick-and-click and wheel bonuses look interactive, but your choices almost never change the expected value.

Modern slots are built from a toolkit of features: free spins, wilds that expand and stick, multipliers that climb, cascades that chain wins, respins, collect symbols and bonus games. They give each game its personality, and they are where almost all of the big wins come from. This guide works through the features you will meet most often, explains exactly what each does, and shows how it changes the way a slot pays.

One principle runs through all of it. A feature is not a gift on top of the game's return to player (RTP). It is part of that return. If you are new to RTP and volatility, start with our slot RTP and volatility guide, then come back here.

How features shape win distribution

Every slot's RTP can be split into two parts: what the base game returns and what the features return. Designers balance the two to set volatility. A low-volatility game might return most of its RTP from ordinary spins. A high-volatility game might return far less from the base game and pack the rest into a free spins round you trigger once every few hundred spins.

Formula

Feature contribution to RTP = probability of triggering per spin × average feature win (as a multiple of stake)

Example: free spins trigger on average once every 200 spins and pay an average of 70x your stake. Their contribution is 70 ÷ 200 = 0.35, or 35% of every dollar wagered. If the total RTP is 96%, the base game returns just 61%. Over a few hundred spins without a trigger, that slot behaves like a 61% game, which is why balances can fall so quickly on high-volatility titles.

96%Example headline RTP
35%Share returned by a 1-in-200, 70x free spins round

Free spins and retriggers

Free spins are the most common slot feature. Landing a set number of scatter symbols, typically three or four, awards a batch of spins played at your triggering stake at no extra cost. They are distinct from casino promotional free spins, which our free spins guide covers.

  • Enhanced rules. Free spins usually change the game: extra wilds, persistent multipliers, removed low-paying symbols or sticky features. That is what makes them worth more than an equal number of base spins.
  • Retriggers. Landing more scatters during the round adds spins. Retriggers give free spins rounds a long tail: most rounds pay modestly, while a few run much longer and pay far more.
  • Scatter count tiers. Many games award more spins or better modifiers for four or five scatters than for three.
  • Choice of round. Some games let you pick between more spins with small multipliers or fewer spins with large ones. Options are normally balanced to the same expected value; you are choosing volatility, not value.

Multipliers: fixed, progressive and random

A multiplier increases a win by a set factor. They come in three main types, and they are the single biggest driver of extreme maximum wins.

TypeHow it worksEffect on volatility
FixedA constant factor, such as all free spins wins paying 3xModerate; easy to understand
ProgressiveGrows with each cascade, spin or collected symbol, such as 1x, 2x, 3x, 5x…High; rewards long sequences heavily
RandomMultiplier symbols or wilds land with a value drawn at random, such as 2x to 100xHigh to very high; huge values are rare

When more than one multiplier applies to the same win, the rules say whether they are added or multiplied. A 2x and a 3x wild on the same line pay 5x if added but 6x if multiplied. With three wilds of 2x, 3x and 5x, the gap widens to 10x versus 30x. Multiplicative stacking is one reason some games can advertise maximum wins of tens of thousands of times the stake.

Global vs win multipliers

Some multipliers apply to a single winning line or cluster. Others are "global" and multiply the total win for the spin or the whole tumble sequence. Global multipliers in pay-anywhere games are how a handful of modest symbol wins become a very large payout.

Wild symbols: every type explained

A wild substitutes for other symbols to complete wins, usually excluding scatters and bonus symbols. The variations are about where the wild goes and how long it stays.

Wild typeWhat it does
StandardSubstitutes in its own position for one spin
StackedAppears in vertical stacks, so it can fill a reel or several rows at once
ExpandingGrows to cover its entire reel when it lands
StickyStays locked in place for several spins or the rest of a feature
WalkingMoves one position, usually one reel left, on each spin until it leaves the grid, often granting a respin each time
Multiplier wildSubstitutes and applies a multiplier to any win it is part of
Spreading or colossalCopies itself to nearby positions or lands as an oversized block

Sticky and walking wilds are powerful in free spins because value accumulates: each wild that lands improves every remaining spin. That accumulation is why rounds with sticky wilds produce a few very large results and many ordinary ones.

Cascades, respins and hold and win

Tumbles and cascades

After a win, the winning symbols are removed and new symbols fall into the gaps. If they form another win, the process repeats, all within a single paid spin. Cascades are standard in cluster and pay-anywhere games and common in Megaways titles. Paired with a progressive multiplier that rises on each cascade, they produce the chain reactions that define games from studios like Pragmatic Play and Play'n GO.

Respins

A respin re-spins some or all reels for free, often with certain symbols held in place. Triggers vary: a near-complete win, a walking wild or a random event. Respins smooth results slightly by giving extra chances on promising spins.

Hold and win, cash collect and link features

Landing a set number of special coin or orb symbols, often six, starts a feature with three respins. Coins lock in place and show cash values or jackpot labels. Each new coin resets the counter to three. The feature ends when you run out of respins, and all values are added up; filling every position usually awards the top fixed jackpot. Many studios, including Playson, 3 Oaks Gaming and Wazdan, build whole ranges around this format. "Cash collect" variants add collector symbols that gather the values of all visible coins.

Mystery symbols, upgrades, expanding reels and splits

  • Mystery symbols. Land as blank or question-mark tiles, then all reveal as the same random symbol. Because they reveal together, they create big lines or clusters in one go.
  • Symbol upgrades. Collecting certain symbols or meters transforms low-paying symbols into higher-paying ones, often for the rest of a feature. This makes later spins in a round worth more than early ones.
  • Expanding reels or grids. The playing area grows during a feature, adding rows or unlocking positions. More positions means more ways or more space for clusters.
  • Split symbols. One position shows two or more copies of a symbol, counting as several symbols for ways or scatter-count purposes. Some games use splitting as a mechanic that multiplies ways dramatically.
  • Symbol removal. Low-paying symbols are taken out of the reels, so remaining wins are bigger on average.

All of these work in the same direction: they let a single spin or round produce far more than the paytable alone suggests. The more of the RTP that rides on them, the higher the volatility.

Ante bets, gamble features and bonus games

Ante bets

An ante bet, sometimes called a double chance or bet boost, increases your stake, commonly by 25%, in exchange for a higher chance of triggering the main feature. The key question is whether the RTP changes. Many games list the RTP with ante active in their rules; if it is equal or higher, you are mainly trading cost per spin for more frequent features. If it is lower, you are paying more for less. Either way, you are wagering 25% more per spin, so your expected loss per spin rises.

Gamble features

After a win, some games offer a double-or-nothing guess, such as red or black on a card, or a ladder you can climb or collect from. These are often priced at or near fair odds, so the house edge on the gamble itself is small, but variance soars: a $20 win gambled twice ends at $80 or $0, with a 25% chance of the former on a 50/50 game. Many bonus terms prohibit gambling bonus-funded wins.

Pick bonuses and wheel bonuses

Pick-and-click games ask you to choose items to reveal prizes, and wheel bonuses spin a prize wheel, sometimes with upgrades to a higher wheel. They feel like skill or luck you can influence. In practice, the expected value is fixed by the game's maths, and in many games the outcome is determined the moment the feature triggers. No strategy for picking boxes changes the long-run return.

What features add

  • Variety and entertainment
  • A realistic route to large wins
  • Choices of volatility, such as free spins options

What they cost

  • A lower base-game return while you wait
  • Longer and deeper losing runs
  • Extra stake for ante bets and buys

Bonus buys and bonus terms

Buying a feature directly concentrates hundreds of spins of turnover into one result. UK-licensed operators do not offer feature buys, and most casinos ban them while a casino bonus is active. Read the restricted features list before using one.

Three quick questions, optional. Answers are shown right here; nothing is shared.

  1. Free spins trigger once every 200 spins and pay 70x on average. How much of a 96% RTP do they supply?
    Show the answer

    35%. Feature contribution = trigger chance × average win = 70 ÷ 200 = 0.35, so the base game returns only 61%.

  2. Wild multipliers of 2x, 3x and 5x land on the same win and the rules multiply them. What is the total?
    Show the answer

    30x. Multiplied: 2 × 3 × 5 = 30x. If the rules added them it would be 2 + 3 + 5 = 10x.

  3. A game lets you choose more spins with small multipliers or fewer with big ones. What are you choosing?
    Show the answer

Volatility, not value. Options are normally balanced to the same expected value; you choose how bumpy the round is.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a sticky wild and an expanding wild?

A sticky wild stays in the same position for several spins, usually for the rest of a free spins round. An expanding wild grows to cover its whole reel on the spin it lands, then normally disappears. Some games combine both, producing expanding wilds that stay locked.

Are multipliers added or multiplied together?

It depends on the game. Many slots add multipliers on the same win (2x and 3x make 5x), while others multiply them (2x and 3x make 6x). The paytable or game rules always state which method is used, and the difference can be large.

Does the ante bet improve my odds?

It increases the chance of triggering free spins but raises your stake, commonly by 25%. Whether it is better value depends on the RTP with the ante bet active, which the game rules should list. In many games the RTP is identical or very close, so it mainly changes volatility and cost per spin.

Should I use the gamble feature?

Gamble features usually offer close to fair odds, such as doubling on a correct red or black guess, so they do not cost much in expected value but sharply increase variance. If you are on a budget or clearing a bonus, skipping it is usually sensible, and some bonus terms forbid it.

What is a hold and win feature?

Hold and win, also called cash collect or link features, gives you a set of respins, usually three. Special value symbols lock in place and each new one resets the respin counter. When you run out of respins or fill the screen, the values are added up and paid.

Do free spins features have a higher RTP than the base game?

The free spins round is part of the overall RTP, not extra to it. In high-volatility slots it can account for a third or more of the total return, which means the base game alone returns much less than the headline figure.
